Altoid I do understand the weather being so nice that a run is unavoidable.

How long have you been running? you say you are starting out at this pace this time? I need to read back a few posts I think.

    Happy trails to you

Flammomof3...that happens to me too.  For me, my husband gets needy and feeling like I am not giving him attention.....but he is starting to realize that if he lets me run when I want to run I am a much happier wife!    He has called me during a run (I use my Iphone as my Ipod) to see what was taking me so long....."Insert eye roll"....but I just keep going.  My HM is in 2 weeks so I have my 10 mile run this weekend and he will just have to miss me.  I found out that Troy Aikman is kicking off the race and I was so excited until I realized that I  won't be at the front of the line to see him! LOL!  Oh well....

Froglejack - I think we all have bad days where we just don't have our "mojo"....I had one on Wednesday night.  My husband was out of town, my kids were at a Church function and the weather was beautiful.  I went 1.75 miles and had to stop.  I just wasn't feeling it...I hadn't felt good all day and running was definitely not in my cards.  I just went home and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the house....I did 5 miles yesterday and it was better and hopefully I will be feeling it for the 10 miles this weekend!

Exactly how my husband feels! Thanks!

6 miles today.  Was sunny and almost 50 when I started but the wind started in shortly after I got out the door.  Not a good run today...had to walk way more than usual for 6 miles...lots of days I can get that without walking at all.  New route because we are my mother-in-laws, a few tough hills, at least for me today.  But a "not good run" is better than no run

Hi everyone! This has been the craziest 2 wks with the weather! I live in upstate NY,I got 16 in of snow(I also happen to live on the top of a hill),then it decided to rain.We had flood watches, the kids school was even closed because of the ice jam in the river that runs through town! Second attempt at dynamite broke that.Needless to say I haven't run only once since last ThursdayWed.I managed a 3.5m run from the bottom of my hill past the school.I'm going to get back on track come Monday.     I want to tell all great job on the 5k's,2m funruns,10k's, hm's.that you have all signed up for & have done already. You give me alot of inspiration, thank you     fyi-if anyone has issues with keeping your hands warm like I do, try putting hand warmers inside of mittens-it really works!! I have raynauds so I have to be careful.stayed inside last winter & swore to myself not again. So far 2 1/2 months of running/walking & I'm up to 3.5m! yea!!   Hills are a great way of getting strength in your legs(don't forget it works our butt!!)

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    teamrocket,

congrats on your run today...i take off the weekends to "rest", but i work on weekends, so i'm constantly on the move. I go back to my running on monday, if i can. this past week i've been having pain in middle part of my foot, on the bottom. i think it's my shoes, b/c they're not running shoes. they're tennis shoes i wear for every day. never thought in my wildest dreams ever, that i would be buying running shoes. if anything i should be buying zumba shoes more than runners, but that's how it goes.

hey, has anyone heard of shoes by the name of RYKA? they're supposedly made by women for women's running. i tried some tonight and they were SOOOOOOOOO COMFY! but, i didn't buy them b/c i've never heard of the company, and of course, they're on clearance...i'm presuming the clearance rack is b/c nobody's heard of them before, and they can't sell.

hopefully back at my run next week. good luck with your weather...i know ya'll have been pummelled this year.

My wife has had a few pair of Ryka's over the past two years. She absolutley loves them. Very comfortable. She likes the room in the front.

    Hope that helps.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

That's a good time! I was running 3 miles in about 42 minutes and ran my first actual 5K in 36:25. You'll run faster in the race. Good luck to you!

It was drizzling this morning, but not cold, so I ran my usual 3 mi route.

I ran 2.99 miles with an average pace of 12:55 mm which is really fast for me. I've never run that far that fast, except for the one race I did. I'm very happy with that because my goal has sort of been to start running regularily at my "race pace." My race pace was 12:40.

I really like what John "the Penguin" Bingham said about eliminating "should" from hyour mindset and instead to think about where you are and where you "want" to be and live with closing the gap between- or something to that effect, lol.

Most trainers would highly suggest that you look at training as a combination of three factors. Distance, speed, and rest.  It is a bit more complicated when you get into individual trainers and their approaches, but the basics are those.  The point is that you shouldn't go out and run at your race pace on every run. That is the quickest way to injury not improvement. Take a mixture of long slow runs, short easy runs, occasional run at race pace, and REST!   If you look at any number of plans available on the web for races of varying distances you will see some combination of these with varying details.  Most of us amateurs should take a day off after either a speed run or our long runs.
Here is one example of a schedule for training for a 5k:

Good luck and good running my friend.

Oh I get plenty of rest. I only run about 3 times a week- and only once at a distance of 3 miles. I'm not even trying to run my race pace on purpose, I run at what seems to be a comfortable pace and it just seems to be getting faster, which is not surprising at the moment since I started out so slowly.

    Thanks for the advice!

I'd take that!   I'm still not back to 5k's even and my pace if I did would be more 45-ish!  Congrats!

Yep. Looks like another great afternoon in which one must go for a run. [Update: Went out for my long run, meaning to do 3ish miles. Felt really good about a mile and half in and went farther than initially planned. Ended up doing 4.25 miles in 59 minutes. Nearly 14mm, but no stopping, no walking, just kept myself moving. So hey, it doesn't matter!]

I started running last April. Ran a 5k for my 28th birthday at the end of May and ran a half marathon in late October - which was very hilly, I made a bathroom stop (don't usually need to) and still managed a 13:30 per mile time. Didn't really do any running over the winter. So considering I'm starting at that pace now, with another half scheduled for just ahead of my 29th birthday, I'm pretty pleased.

4 miles yesterday and was scheduled to do 12 today but just can't seem to get motivated for it.  It's beautiful out, warm and sunny, about 50 degrees.  The pain in my right hip is continueing.  I've been limping for almost 3 weeks now.  Doesn't hurt when I run but does when I walk, especially after first getting up from sitting or lieing down.  Right in the middle of the buttock.  Not sure what is going on.  The upper portion of my ankles, where achilles attaches, are both very stiff today too.  I'm kinda bummed.  Is really to pretty to not be out there.
