Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi Ya'll. i'm new to this thread. I was so glad when i saw it though, because i'm a slow runner.

A little about me - 31, 5'10" 175lbs.  Started C25K in May 2010.  STRUGGLED big time, but by winter time i could run 5k on the treadmill, and did 2 races this past Spring (40 min the first time, 36 min the 2nd) and i did the Warrior Dash (google it).  I started at 205lbs, and have now lost 30lbs.  I'm into running strictly for the weightloss portion of it.  I hated running at first, and quite honestly, i dont really love it yet.  It's been over a year and i was hoping i would start to like it, but i really dont.  HOWEVER, i know how i struggled SO much to get to this point, that there is no way i'll stop.  If given the choice, i'd much rather lay on the couch, but i do feel better once i go run.  I only run on the treadmill, and outside only for races. I'm contemplating training for a 10k, but i dont want injuries.  My knees have taken a beating the last year, and i'm wondering if i should just try to improve my 5k time, or go the distance and work on 10k.  I just want to burn fat.  Lately i've been doing interval training.  run for 1 minute at 3.5mph, then 1 minute at 6.7mph for 30 minutes.

I know i'll never be fast, but i'm hoping that by being a little faster, i'll burn more calories.  With that, i'm hoping to get to my ultimate goal of being 150lbs.  half way there!

If that is anythig like the Desert Stampede we had here in Midland, that is nothing to take lightly. That is a serious 10K monstrosity of a course. Where are you from? Oh, and a big Penguin Welcome!!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Welcome MBz - I am super slow and in this for the weight loss, but I do like the ploggeling along at my pace.  Interesting that you have done all the running on a treadmill.  Movement = victory = weight

loss = reaching our personal goals.  Way to push forward and achieve.

Finally got outside for a serious length of time.  I waddled out a very slow mile and then just had to walk the rest of my regular route to meet the 4 miles I had been doing before the heat set in.  I also did not put that Crap in my Mouth after the waddling time, as known to do.......very big victory for me.  Core work in the a.m. before work and then same plan of attack for the pm routine after work.   Waddling on.....

JoAnn - you rock with information as does Richard E.  - Inspiration and hope to maybe, just maybe I could one day conqueor a HM, always gain from reading your encouraging posts.      Congrats on that -7 on your score card too!   Sounds like a fun week, even if it was challenging.

Actually encouraged by all the posts and information.  The heat has been a real test and I have not been able to push myself to get much time in waddling.   The biggest victory was getting out there tonight and not ruining it by putting the wrong stuff in my mouth.  I too would love to challenge myself with a dual or tri, but for right now, it is the HM and probably will be further down the road as I try to improve before I jump into the HM pool.

Well - my run of good enjoyable sessions came to an end. I did 4 miles Monday morning but it wasn't pretty. Couldn't get settled, breathing felt awkward, blah blah blah. Then at the 1.5 mile mark I passed a construction site, caught my foot on an edge of some brocken asphalt and did a pretty spectacular tumble. Finished the run but I expect to be sore for 1-2 days.

At least the next one should feel better - right?

Hi Richard, this might not have been your day. Have a good day today!

I had such a day yesterdays, too - but I did not go running. At least I can blame PMS.

Yikes!  Glad you did not sprain an ankle on that tumble.  Recover and go back, kick that asphalt.   Thanks for sharing the pics and putting a personal face to the cause you are running for.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

MonkeyBiznass, we are in the same boat! I run to burn calories (there is thread on this topic opened last week).

I for myself could never stick to a treadmill, I love what I see outside when running en plein air.

I am into interval training, too, but I do it in a different way: During 1 workout (out of 3 or 4 per week) I run 30 secs at maximum speed, after 2  weeks I add another interval and after sever months I run 5 high impact intervals once a week, the other workouts are at regular speed (which is 7.5 km/h for me).

Those intervals once per week boost the metabolism. :-)

Do you know your heart beat rate? Maybe it is not in the right range, so you never experience the flow/runner's high?

If you run too fast or too slow, you might keep on struggling forever.

Instead of running faster through a whole workout, you might probably run longer and add only a few high impact intervals.

I am almost sure you will reach your goal ! We might tick the same way. :-)

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Yep, i only do my running on the treadmill.  I ran outside once before my first 5k.  The next time i ran outside was for my 2nd 5k and when i did the warrior dash.  I like being close to a bathroom, in AC, and having the ability to watch tv when i run.  i'm not outdoorsy, so i keep my running inside.  I'm running strictly for weightloss not because i like to run, so i keep it comfortable inside.  Right now i'm just working on speed in the hopes of knocking some time off my next 5k in the fall.  I've been doing interval training but my fast intervals are getting a little easier, so i think im going to bump up the speed and hopefully improve my stamina and burn more fat all at the same time.

I realize i'll never be super fast.  i was bummed that i was one of the last people to finish my first 5k, but at that point i was just glad i finished.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

My interval training lately has been walking at 3.5mph for 1 minute then running at 6.7mph for 1 minute.  That seems to kick my butt after 30 minutes, so i havent really done much more with it.  I'm thinking of having my hard intervals go up to 7mph or so and see how i do there.

after about 10-14 minutes, my heart rate is usually in the 165-174 range.

i have NO interest in running outside.  :-)  i just dont like it.  I like watching tv when i run.  keeps my mind more occupied than listening to the ipod does.  i will try what you said, and kick up the intervals into longer harder runs.  cuz what i'm doing right now doesnt seem to be burning lots of fat.  ive hit that plateau.  i'm hoping to get down to that magic number of 150 by the beginning of december when i go on vacation

it depends on your age, but anything above 170 might be too high to enjoy running. I run at 155. (not races, training = fat loss)

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

i'm 31.  the little chart on the treadmill says that im in the cardio training zone.  the fat burn zone is in the in the 150s and 160s for me.  ive often thought that maybe i should slow down, but i figured the faster the better.  especially with the intervals, but i do the intervals so frequently, my heart rate usually just stays around 165-170.  i'm just trying to burn as much fast as possible.  i was hoping the intervals would not only help me blast fat, but help with my speed.

i'm open to any suggestions!  my routine is getting kind of old, so i'm open to different ways of doing it

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

of course I am no expert, other probably know more, but what I can say is an interval is meant to be an interval only and not the average impact.

When your pulse remains high, you don't do intervals but one more or less steady routine. (difficult to express for me because I am not a native english speaker).

I would recommend slowing down between the intervals, so your pulse goes down to 155, maybe even 150!

Of course, a penguin is talking to you!

I can only say like this I managed to burn fat even though my BMI is beloew 23 and I don't live on a diet!

What I can definitiely say is: "the faster running" is not "the better", in the long-running. :-)

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

you are probably right.  If my heart rate stays high because i dont allow enough time to bring it down, i guess the whole interval thing probably isnt really working.  i read all these different work out websites trying to figure out what to do, but its hard to tell whats best, ya know?

I'm just trying to find a way to burn the msot amount of fat.  Perhaps i should just run a little longer at a slower speed and heart rate instead of killing myself on intervals.

    DUDE! Ouch.

Good thing you are a Penguin cause we just bouce back up, right? Way to hang in there. Take care not to re-injure - but I am sure you know what to do. What beautiful children you have pictured on your page.Take care! (at least it was a "spectacular tumble"....it's good to commit to the best...no less-than-all-out tumble. Give it all you got! LOL.)
