Monkey Biznass: Since running isn't necessarily a passion but a means to an end, have you considered mixing it up a bit by maybe training for a triathalon? Isn't there a triathlalete on this string somewhere? I have a friend who does the TNT bit training for a tri and she swears by them. I was just wondering if varying the activity would increase weight loss byvirtue of moving more body parts or making it more interesting and helping you work out for longer periods of time. Any thoughts?

I guess there is nothing wrong with intervals, as long as they remain intervals. A book I like recommends 5min between each interval so you can be sure to get the pulse down between 2 intervals.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Thats definitely an idea.  I dont have access to a pool though.  I'm just trying to burn some calories.  I dont think i'll ever take my running game outside.  its strictly inside to burn fat.  i do a few races just to check my progress with timing, but otherwise i have no interest in doing lots of races.  i dont want everyone to think i have a real bad attitude or anything, im just not a person who really likes running.  honestly, i rather just lay on the couch, but that doesnt really help my weight loss :-)  so i'm just trying to run fast and hard, burn my calories and get out of the stupid gym so i can go about the rest of my life.  i figured running was pretty efficent at fat burn so thats why i started.

I really wanted to be able to do a 5k too.  now that ive done a few, i'm just trying to continue the weight loss.

Well, maybe just mixing it up if the running starts getting to you. Spinning or Zumba seem to be big these days too, and they are indoors. I just know how it feels to get bored with an activity. I've done about 6 Avon Walks for Breast Cancer and I enjoy running races now because it is nice to be doing something where I get a good workout without having to commit an entire day to the process. )But, I have to say, I did raise a lot of money). Good luck and congratulations! I bet that weight keeps coming off!

monkeybiznass.... fellow treadmill runner here as well... What I found that has worked for me(39) and my mom(she is 71) we do interval traning at 6 mins runs and 4 min walks we do this for about an hour then do the weights for about 15 mins. we did start with 5 mins runs and 5 min walks. we keep the speed at 4.0 for me and 3.8 for my mom. it gets us around 3.2 miles in the hour.  I will let you know the scales are stupid and they dont move in the downward postion. but my clothes are fitting different I am down 4 dress sizes. so you might just try somthing till you find somthing that works for you.

the improtant thing is that you are up and moving and that is very good

MbZ - I think you should write a book on this  - I don't think I have ever seen a book on the treadmill as the main exercise tool.  You might be onto something and reach a whole new segment of society that might start moving, inspired by your experience using the treadmill.   Alot of folks can't be outside for lengths of time due to allergies, atshma, - it just struck me reading your thoughts on this post that there maybe a book in you the world is waiting to read......

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I dont think being an author is in my future :-)  i havent mastered the treadmill very well, but maybe the longer i do it, the more tips ill have!  i dont run outside because i just dont like nature much.  the bugs, traffic, no bathroom, no tv,  its just not for me. i  like the temperature controlled environment. what can i say, i'm an indoorsy girl.

Like i mentioned before, i'm only in this for the exercise. not because i like to run.  people say that i should find something that i like to do when it comes to working out, but i dont like any of it.  so i just stick to running because it burns the most calories in the shortest amount of time.  i throw in a few races here and there and thats it.

i didnt do as many intervals last night on the treadmill. i got my heart rate down a little instead of being in that really high range all the time.  i'm going to experiement with different intervals, and see what works best.  trying to burn that fat!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hi again!

I thought you should know that the treadmill is not the best tool for burning kcals. The elliptical trainer (=cross trainer) burns way more because you activate the muscles of your arms and back much more than you would do on the treadmill.

A famous german TV show once tested various ways to burn kcals. They let 3 people workout during the show.  - rowing, running on a treadmill and the cross-trainer. Everyone expected the runner to burn most kcals but the cross-trainer was the winner!

About the low pulse: you will lose fat also in the higher heart rate zone, what I was trying to say is this:

a lower pulse with short intensive intervalls is more likely to stimulate your metabolism.

I would love to see a photo of your running environment. An Austrian TV host lost 15kg by "looking at the white wall" on the treadmill. Of course she was running, not just looking at the wall.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

i do the elliptical sometimes, but after about 25 minutes, my middle toes always seem to go numb. i have no idea why that is. i dont know if its because my feet never actually move? i dont know.  maybe i'll run a little then do a little elliptical to mix it up.

i run at a gym.  they have lots of tv's there, so i can watch shows while im running.  i just plug in my headphones, watch my shows, and run. :-)

O my God Paula!  I didn't even think about that! I had a really close encounter with a bumblebee and was told they are attracted to white shirts. I think I've officially been steered away from the woods. I always thought to myself through the years that maybe I have never been stung by anything yet because the lord has been protecting me from a massive allergic reaction (haha). yea, I don't think the woods is for me, thanks for the warning!

Don't give up just yet!. I've had bilateral bunion surgery and wear orthotics for a morton's neuroma. There's lots that the foot doctor can remedy. Unfortunately sometimes it''s not as fast as we would like. I've been down with achilles tendonitis too and it was very frustrating. You haven't been wearing flip-flops alot have you? My doc says lots of folks come in in Sept after not wearing much support all summer. Hope you feel better soon

wannaberunner, sounds like you've got age on your side and you've been able to pick up your running again pretty quick. do you remember having your feet go numb in hs or getting so flushed?

Welcome and congrats on the weight loss!! I wish I could transition from the treadmill to the road like you do but the downhills kill me if i'm too many days on the treadmill (which is not my favorite thing anyways.)

as an aside:  My son carries epipen and benadryl when he runs - with exception of HS XC races where he carried his kit up to the start line.   He carries them in a runners fanny pack  (has holder for bottle of h20 etc).  its just big enough and does not impact his running.  When he does a longer run, 10K, HM he will wear it.

He needed it just couple of months ago at a grad party.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Looking for anyone who has experienced foot/ankle pain that is on top of my foot  --  experienced it first while on drive from Virginia to Chicago.  bad enought to keep me awake.  I cannot tie it to running, biking or karate.  its my non-driving foot  (left).  I had planned to get some road work in this week while on vacation but have decided to take it easy.  Most times I can trace foot pain to turning ankle over or stepping in hole etc. I have full range of motion and no loss of strength.  I have HM in one month so hoping this doesn't last more than week or so.
