    Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I'm running my second 5K in the morning and I think I am more nervous than the first.  Plus it's going to be COLD!  I've been an occasional lurker on here for quite a while and have learned a lot.  Patience and perserverance being the greatest.  Good luck to all!

Thanks Porffor! Yes, it was totally amazing to hear what we raised as a group, but was even more amazing was that the top individual fundraiser brought in either just over or under $16,000 by herself! It was an amazing experience so I'll be doing the 2013 Nike Womens Marathon with TNT.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

It's nice to know that there are other people out there that are slow but happy.

I am not just a penguin runner, I am a penguin tri athlete.  To date, I have finished 10 sprint and mini-sprint triathlons.  I haven't finished first but I haven't finished last either.  I have to say that the run is my worst leg of the tri but it doesn't keep me from participating.

I just started exercising in 2009 because of siatica problems.  I knew I had to lose weight and strengthen my core.  So off to the gym I went...but just exercising got boring and thats when I discovered triathlons and started training rather than just exercising.

My goal is to do the Louisville IronMan for my 50th birthday.  So presently I am doing everything I can to lose 30 extra pounds and be able to walk/run a 1/2 then a whole marathon and complete a 1/2 ironman.

Sometimes I look at my goals and I feel foolish.  My problem isn't motivation, it is self doubt.  So many times I wonder what I am thinking when I look at my goal and I try to convince myself I'm not really an athlete and that these are impossible goals and maybe I'm just being ridiculus but then I bounce back and sign up for another event.

One thing is certain, I'm glad I started!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hi Everyone.  Haven't checked in much lately.  I haven't been running much because I just haven't pushed myself.  Getting in a run about once a week.  Have a lot of family issues I'm struggling with and I need to run to deal with it instead of letting the stress stop me from doing anything.

Yesterday I drove 2 hours to Las Cruces NM to run a Cupid's Chase 5k.  Our races around my part of the state are more small local races.  I think there was maybe 200+ at this event which is up from last year which was about 130 or so if I remember right and the year before that, which is the first year they did it in this area, they said last year that the first year had been about 70 or 80.  So it's growing.  I did it in 38:29 which was okay for me.  Not fast but not last either.  I'm 56, and will be 57 in a few weeks so in the age 55-59 group there were 6 of us and I came in 4th.  No idea of overall but there were a number of people who came in after me and I was at the finish line rooting for them.  At least I was after I walked around a bit and hit the bathroom.  It was in the small historic town of Mesilla which is a few miles outside of Las Cruces.  Old buildings with galleries, restarants, and other interesting things there now and very narrow streets.  It was pretty flat most of the course and went into the outskirts of town where there are a lot of pecan growers.  They had Mariachi singers and a high school band before and after the race and then dancers in Mexican costume doing some dances.  They awarded 1st place awards for each age group.  The lady who won my age group was 56, and did it in 21:32.  I will never in my wildest dreams be able to compete with her!!!  But that's okay, I'm happy being a penguin just like the rest of you on this group.

My next planned event is the end of March when I will be doing the 15 mile course of the Bataan Death March Memorial event at White Sands Missile range.  I had hoped to be able run most of it this year (I've done it the past 2 years also) but that's not going to happen because I haven't worked on it like I was going to.  But anyway I will run some of it and walk the rest of it.  The first year, before I even started running,  I did it in just under 4 hours.  Last year it took me 45 minutes longer and I almost quit several times because I had badly bruised my hip a few weeks before and it was still a little swollen.  It wasn't hurting me but the injury was draining me more than I realized I think.  We also had 45 mile an hour winds.  It was the one of the hardest things I've ever done to finish that last year but was proud I did it afterwards.  It had over 6000 entrants, about 2/3 of them military.  I kept thinking they can't give up when they are deployed and just want to quit and they have it harder than I did so I couldn't give up either.  Hoping for better weather this year than those awful winds.  I would like to beat my first year's time and to do it in 3 1/2 hours would be awesome to me for the 15 miles.  Not fast but who cares.  We do wear chip timers for the event and there is a 26.2 mile one at the same time with much of the course shared except where they break off to do the additional 11 miles on a different route and rejoin a few miles from the end.  THe only awards given are to the first 2 finishers in the 26.2 mile even but everyone is timed.  THere are also team categories available in both military and civilian and also the military has a category for carryig a 35 lb pack that participants fill with things like dried beans, rice, etc that is donated to the homeless shelters and food banks in Las Cruces after the race.  We've had a few original Bataan Death March survivors at the starting gate as we go through that send us off and we can thank for their service if we want (I always do) but they are becoming very few now as they are in their 90's if they are still alive.  During the opening ceremony they have the Color guard and they read off the names of any original survivors that died in the past year.  It's a really awesome event to me to be with so many military both past and present and some future ones.  People come from all 50 states and a few other countries to participate and there are young and old, wounded warriors including ones I've seen on crutches, on prosthetic legs, in wheelchairs, etc.  To me it's the most important event I do since I first did in in 2010.

Okay, I've rambled on a lot for now.  I really am going to try to get my mojo going again, get out and run, and also check in here more often.

MouseRN I just read your Tinkerbell race reports!  Sounds so awesome and for such a great cause that you guys ran and trained as a group.  Congratulations on getting that first HM done and working on your half fanatic status.

Shelltherunner, trust me, there's nothing wrong with being slower! You get to see so much more during the run that those who are out the for the speed! lol!

Train smart and you'll get to your goal. But be careful...once you get that first one done the bug might have just latched on long term. At the end of last year Tink was my last race and I wanted to see if I'd do a few more this year. Well, look at my race schedule now!! ROTFL!! I've even added 4 FULL marathons (need to do some speed work which I hate) that I can't add to the list because there's not enough room in the module!! Run safe!

Scotty 67, totally agree! I used to do timed intervals but now I just go at a pace that my body tells me to. If I need to walk I walk. If I'm ready to run, I run. I'm not looking to be on the podium, I'm looking to finish with a respectable time for myself, in the upright position and with a smile on my face! That typically means a race pace in the 11-12 min/mile pace for me currently. Safe running!

Thanks Soulsong! How do you like the Determination Training? Are you doing a live training or online? I'd appreciate a breakdown of the program...couldn't really find any reviews about it when I was looking for a group to train with. My experience with TNT was fantastic but I just like to keep my options open. Thanks! Run safe!

Thanks CKLindsay! Yes, it was a great first HM experience! I'm looking at possibly doing the Disneyland HM over the Labor Day weekend and I will definitely be doing the WDW Wine & Dine HM in November. Great fun especially for the Disney-phile (I'm a fan of Disney but not a major fan...I know some of them! lol!). Safe running!

Hi carolekveen! You are an inspiration! I was hoping to do my first duathlon in May but I think I'll end up putting it off for a year as I'm hoping to become a member of the Half Fanatic Club and the Marathon Maniac Club. I'd really like to do a tri eventually but I have a major water phobia (anything higher than my neck or wide, open water). I'm hoping to break through that eventually and finish at least a sprint tri within 5 years. I'll see about and Ironman maybe 10 years from now!! LOL!

Like you I just recently started exercising after almost 20 years of doing nothing. So, great job. Don't let those inner voices get the best of you!! (I have to fight them too.) Safe training!
