I’m not much of a threat to win a race, but I’m not opposed to using the glare off my scalp to help me advance a few places.  In fact I may even dust off the power buffer.  At least my noggin is good for something.

I just picked up my race packet – bib #1363.  I haven’t had a chance to look through the envelope yet, but I know there’s a tech shirt and a few other goodies inside.

Plus the shop had a 20% off sale so I grabbed a new pair of shoes while I was there.  This will probably be the pair I wear for my marathon in November.

No run for me today.  Tomorrow I will take it easy for 3 or 4 miles just to stay loose for the race Saturday.

Weather.com is predicting 81 degrees for my start.  We had tornados in the area yesterday afternoon.  I hope they sweep up the streets or it may turn into a steeplechase after all.

Maryalicia:  I noticed you improved your 5k time significantly between July and August, plus you push a stroller.  We could probably work out a handicap to even the playing field.

Thanks for noticing. This may sound naive, but is a minute a worthy time shave?

As for running times, If I didn't have her, I know I would not have to maneuver out of  people's way, wait for people to move over, ect. Go long on the outside to pass. Plus the sheer loss of weight I am pushing. I always wonder what I could do without the stroller, but it's just so neat pushing her- and the smiles and comments ( 'you go mommys' / 'you know she's winning right' ect) are fun as well. I figure, training with her, and running my 5ks and 10Ks will help my run for my 1/2 without her.

As for the handicap...I'm listening (or reading in this case)

PS cannot wait for the results! Too bad this thread ends after this week's 5K...or does it?

1 minute improvement in 1 month, I’d say that’s great.  Just wait until the weather cools and see how you do.

My last 5k was my PR of 24:10

I think Jim said his last race was 25:20.

    Those average to 24:45.

Subtract that from your last race time 30:01.

And we can spot you 5:16 if you can still get into a race this weekend.

I’m not sure if that’s how real handicappers do it but it makes sense to me.  Although somebody better check my math.

I think Jim had a great idea with this and I’m having a blast with it.  I could see other evenly matched runners doing it on a regular basis in the forum.

The other one that does allow strollers is an hour drive away, and I have something planned for lunch, so I am unable to do that one. It's up to you two this wekend! But next time, next time I will be there!

You guys have me thinking about elbowing in on your fun. My 5k PR is 24:03, but that was in September 2008.

I haven't run any 5ks since because it seems like I'll hit the finish line right about the time I've gotten warmed up.

I have a bit of a hair-handicap (from an aerodynamic perspective, but it will be minimized by that morning's haircut), and I'm only 5'8", so I have to overcome a short-legs disadvantage. Of course, I'm almost exactly 39.25 years old....

My qualifying race would be the Mississippi Mudds 5k, which has a 6:30pm start time. Haven't done an evening race in a while. Sounds like it'll be hot. Of course, in Buffalo hot is anything above 0°F.

Too bad you can’t join us this weekend Maryalicia but I must say I’m a little relieved.  With Jim being so generous with the handicap, and you improving so much with each race, at least we don’t have to worry about getting beat by a girl – yet.

Ah jeez!  We’re going to stay this competitive on training runs? I think my marathon training just got kicked up a notch.

I’ve never done a one mile time trial.  My best mile from a 5k is 7:15, hopefully to be broken on Saturday.

My daughter a/k/a the official Running Bird Sports Photographer was recently inspired to start C25K after watching her Pop tear up the asphalt lately.  She’s at band camp right now so I’m not sure if I will be able to get pictures at this weekend’s race.

Oh yes! I have found my winner! /looks dreamily at DWM

BTW talking about the hair disadvantage, I have you beat on that one. But never worry! I am almost exactly not precisely and In no way surely never definitely bald yet.

Geez, talk about picking up the pace. In the time it took me to post one comment, you both got in one!

Yes, Jim was generous, and as a 'Girl' as you so put it, I must take my advatages as I see it. And was I crunching those numbers (speaking of look right at my pretty 100 post mark!l) and thinking I could do it with my handicap. But I think Jim and Bird plotted with local race directors  (and slipped them a $20) to make thier races go away and/or ban strollers. And it worked!

Message was edited by: Maryalicia to add my 100 post mark! a Momentous feat!
