Arm Swelling While Jogging

Hello everyone! I'm new to the newbie board, so HI : )

I've just completed week 4 of C25k.  During few jogs, my arms (especially my left) started swelling so bad that they were painful to move.  It always happened at the last 5 minute run.

I was wondering if anyone knows the cause of this?  Should I be concerned?

I am 23, I have MVP and orthostatic hypotension.  I was thinking maybe it has to do with my orthostatic problems, and my blood is pooling in my arms and lowering my BP.  Its quite disconcerting and it makes the final run even more difficult.

Stacy - could you explain the 'MVP' acronym to me, please? I have a feeling I should know it & have long forgotten - thanx.

Okay - does the swelling happen evenly throughout your arm or from the extremities up? You mentioned pain, do you also have other symptoms - numbness, tingling, lack of sensation?

How long does it take for the swelling to leave? Do you find it drains faster if you do something specific? You mentioned orthostatic hypotension - do you feel any of the lightheadedness & other symptoms of that in association with this?

It's pretty hard to think it's NOT somehow related to your heart, considering you have MVP.

It might be worth keeping as detailed a log as you can pertaining to the symptoms & take them to your doctor. Unless your doctor contraindicates it, is there some kind of compression sleeve you could try I wonder, to force the excess fluid out of the tissues?

It is really unique & I couldn't find anything close to what you're describing online.

All I can advise is keep your doctor aware & moniter how quickly & well the swelling resolves itself. If it takes longer to go away or get worse, I'd go easier on the workouts for a bit until you can get some answers.

    Hi,

Neither MVP nor orthostasis should cause that symptoms. You likely have incxreased venous return in that arm and a decrease in lymphatic drainage... I would recommend a compression sleeve for that arm when you run... and at specific intervals (ie every 5 minutes for 30 seconds) lift the arm over your head while running.

    Good luck

But by the way - you can still go running, there isnt anything wrong with it. It doesnt happen to everyone, but it does happen to some people... Good luck!!
