Every year after thanksgiving dinner it's the same thing...I am barely able to keep my eyes open as I flop down on the couch to watch football. Is it the turkey or is it just me? Is there anyway to avoid the after thanksgiving lethargy?
Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan which can trigger drowsiness. Since many other foods contain tryptophan though, that doesn't explain it entirely. This link -- http://chemistry.about.com/od/holidaysseasons/a/tiredturkey.htm -- seems to have some helpful information about what exactly makes you sleepy (basically, turkey + fat + lots of carbs + alcohol) and so you might be able to avoid the food coma. (Or, you can just enjoy it!)
