Tricks to keeping a steady pace?

So during my regular runs it didnt seem that I had a pacing issue...then I ran a 5k and then a 10k . During the two races I found myself with no other runners close by and truelly struggled to keep a good pace; varying from too fast to sustain to too slow, and actually ended up running at a worse time then what I had done on a practice run. This led to the discovery that I think that I have been somewhat using my dog , my favorate running partner as a pace keeper. Unfortunatelly many races do not allow dogs, but I do not want to stop training with him either..any suggestions of what I can do during training to prepare myself to hold a pace when Im on my own?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Have you looked into a watch for running. I have a Garmin 405 and a quick glance at the watch will give you your current pace, pace for current lap and distance. Check out heart rate monitor. Thats where I found the best price. Good Luck.
If you have a smartphone with GPS there are a lot of apps that can display your current pace/average pace, etc.
I use Sportypal: http://www.sportypal.com/Home

I had this exact problem until I got my Garmin Forerunner 305.
Actually, I'm not so fast that I find myself alone in the middle of a race, so I tend to "latch on" to someone and use them to pull me along. My problem is that, in the beginning couple of miles, I tend to latch onto the wrong crowd and run too fast, and end up paying for it later. With my Garmin now, this is never an issue anymore.
I'm kind of a running newb, but I have been using the podcast called Podrunner Intervals on itunes.
There's also a set of free ones by the same guy called Podrunner. He has them set up for about an hours run at a steady beat. His workouts are listed as beats per minutes. I think that having a steady beat has helped me run at a very steady pace. Maybe music will help you?

Thanks eveyone for your answers! Sorry took so long to reply but my computer was not playing nice. Apparently after browsing over my shoulder while I wrote this post the hubby went online and bought me a nike band with chip that goes in the shoe. Once I get it callibrated think it will be a good solution, similar to some of the other pace keepers.
